How to train during your summer break
Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy the outdoors. For soccer players, it is also a great time to push your fitness even further. Here are some of the best ways to get in shape during your summer break:
Goals
The only way to get into shape without taxing your system too much is goal-oriented training. Pick goals that address any weakness from your last season. For example, you might want to run a seven-minute mile or increase endurance by running 10km.
Run
If you don’t have any specific goals, then a running habit is a good way to maintain and even increase your fitness levels throughout summer. Running is also a good way to get out and enjoy the weather and socialize.
Sports
Another good way to increase fitness is to play other sports. Often, other sports will increase non-sport specific fitness. For example, Basketball will increase endurance and sprint as it is akin to interval training. Swimming also increases endurance without stressing joints and muscles.
Heat
Most people will avoid the 2-4pm window when the day is at its hottest. However, that window is a good time to train provided you stay hydrated and train safely. Training during hot weather causes the body to release heat-shock proteins that build resilience and endurance.
Just remember to get as much rest as you need to recover from your extra training.
